You use your refrigerator to keep all of those goodies inside so they stay nice and cool—cheeses, milk, juice, lunch meat, and frozen foods as well. Your refrigerator keeps your food fresh and safe for consumption, but if you aren't taking care of your appliance, all of that food you've spent your hard-earned money on won't be any good. Read on for tips to keep your refrigerator running properly and fresh as well.

Clean It Out

You should clean out your refrigerator often and remove any old or rotting food. Get inside the drawers and clean them out, and also clean out the door shelves as well. Keeping outdated food is not only a good idea to keep you from eating bad food, but it's also good for your refrigerator as well. Having too much in your refrigerator may cause your appliance to not be able to cool properly, and you may notice some warm spots in your refrigerator. Clean it out at least once per month and remove anything that is outdated or that you don't want any longer.

Wipe It Down

Wipe down your refrigerator both inside and outside. Clean the door seals and the vents as well. Your refrigerator can build up with dust and dirt, not to mention the pet hair (if you have pets). All of this buildup can cause your appliance to heat up and have problems keeping cool. If you don't complete this task often enough, it can lead to a breakdown of your appliance long before its time. Pull out your refrigerator and clean the coils along the backside, and clean up anything that may have fallen behind your appliance. Also clean up the dust below your appliance.

Change Filters

If you have a refrigerator that has a water or ice dispenser, it most likely has a filter that needs to be changed. If you've never done this, it's definitely time to change it. You can find these filters online or at your local appliance store. Write down your appliance model and filter model as well so you get the proper filter. Pull out the old filter and then put the new one in its place the same way you removed the old one. You may have to read the manufacturer's instructions, as you might have to allow the water to drain a bit before it's safe for drinking.

If you haven't done any type of maintenance to your refrigerator, it's time to get to work before your appliance breaks down. Contact an appliance repair service, such as American Appliance Inc, for help if your appliances are in need of repairs.
